Depuis leur construction en 1974 et 1975, les locomotives bifréquences BR 181-2 ont toujours été affectée au dépôt de Saarbrücken. Suite à la fermeture de celui-ci, elles sont affectés depuis quelques semaines au dépôt de Frankfurt am Main. Affectée à DB Reise et Touristik, les 24 locomotives sont encore en service intensif en voyageurs, sur Strasbourg - Karlsruhe - Stuttgart, Metz - Saarbrücken - Frankfurt, et Luxembourg - Koblenz. Elles assurent encore quelques trains de fret, jusque Apach ou Forbach. En 2007, l'arrivée du TGV-Est devrait leur porter un coup sevère sur leurs services.
